The Rosa Parks Center for Learning, Technology, and the Arts (RPCLTA)

Special Thanks

We would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to the six teams of students from the 2006 University Of Southern California Viterbi School Of Engineering’s Engineering Writing Program for their innovative and inspiring plans and recommendations for the Rosa Parks Center.

Plans for the Center

The Rosa Parks Center for Learning, Technology, and the Arts (RPCLTA), is to be constructed from an existing building that will house the current and future programs of FSS. Designed as a campus layout, RPCLTA will serve as a community hub that encompasses the center’s function as a monument, technological example, learning institution, and community gathering place.

There are four broad issues to address for the building’s design: universal access, environmental friendliness, safety, and providing effective learning environments.

• Every detail of the building’s construction, from hallway width to bathroom sinks, will assist in allowing everyone to use the center equally.
• The center will provide service to people of all ages and abilities without discrimination or separation.
• Contemporary ethics demand design considerations not only for people but for the environment as well.

The goals of the RPCLTA concentrate on personal development by encouraging community members to recognize and nurture the best in themselves. The center will promote educational achievement and life-long learning in a hi-tech environment that will provide solid footing for community members to adapt easily and effectively into information and knowledge driven world. The center endorses the element of community development and upholds this quality by providing the opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to take full advantage of its services. With these considerations, the Center will hold a large and unique role within the community.

It will stand as a public monument and will be a model institution not only through its tech-based education and facility, but also through its resource efficiency, innovative safety measures, effective learning design, and ability to provide services for all patrons, seamlessly.
