"Through our scientific and technological genius, we
have made of this world a neighborhood and yet we have not had the ethical
commitment
to make of it a brotherhood. But somehow, and in some way, we have got
to do this. We must all learn to live together as brothers or we will all
perish together as fools"
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.
Harvard
Heights
Community Wireless Project

Created
in 2002, our
Community Wireless Project has provided free wireless broadband access
and donated
computers
to families within the Mid-City Los Angeles neighborhood
of Harvard Heights. This project was developed to bring Internet access
to lower income families and to serve as a tool for building community
among
the
area’s
ethnically and economically diverse residents. Our goal is to also
develop the Harvard
Heights Community Network --
an online community network that will feature content created by and
for the local community focusing
on education,
cultural,
civic,
and
community
development resources, local issues, and information.
The
project's first major milestone, was reached with the mounting of an
external omnidirectional antenna on King Day, January 19, 2002 -- the
first neighborhood wireless node.
Our
special thanks to our six teams of students (from 2002-2004) from
the USC Engineering Writing Program for their contributions toward
the development
of this project. In addition, we acknowledge and thank our Spring
2005 USC Computer Science team for their work in developing the
Harvard Heights Community Network prototype.
